How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Should I use the mileage the manufacturer claims?
Rated mileage is measured under test conditions. Real-world figures run 20 to 30 percent lower in city traffic, with a full load, or with the air conditioning running. Your own observed mileage gives a far more useful answer.
Why does fuel cost more in some cities?
State VAT is the biggest factor and differs widely between states. Freight from the supplying depot adds the rest, which is why two cities within one state can also differ by a rupee or two.
Is CNG cheaper than petrol?
Per unit it usually is, and CNG vehicles also tend to travel further per kilogram than a petrol car does per litre. Compare the cost per kilometre the calculator shows rather than the pump price alone.
